Family Next Door is a project that through communal dining gathers peoplefrom different countries together.

The Family Next Door project is here for families to exchange cultural experiences, share different meals and make long-term friendships. People meet, cook and eat together and, above all, create relationships between families from different countries through the communal dining of Czech families and the families of foreigners. Foreigners have the opportunity to get to know Czech culture or customs better, Czech families will taste new dishes and get to know different cultures.

The project also includes stand-up comedy performances by foreigners in cafes or other spaces that are suitable for such an event.

Families are paired and looked after by a project assistant, who decides on the basis of age, hobbies, language and place of residence of the participating families .In recent years families from all over the world have joined the Family Next Door project.

Families from Syria, India, Belarus, Turkey,Egypt, Libya, Iran, Algeria, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Vietnam, Mongolia, New Zealand and of course many Czech families have been a big part of this beautiful project.

Can I participate?

A Czech family or a family of foreigners from third countries with legal residence status in the Czech Republic can join.

How is the meeting conceived?

The family decides whether they want to be the host or not. One of the 30 scheduled meetings will then take place in the house hold of the host family. Registered families are connected on the basis of certain criteria (age, profession, occupation, interests, number and age of children, etc.); this ensures common topics for conversation and a friendly atmosphere.

Often such relationships continue after dinner. At each meeting, there is an assistant, whose task is not only to mediate communication and over see the course of the meeting, but also, if necessary, to break the initial shyness.

The project has been contributing to the strengthening of the multicultural environment formany years and, through its original and individual form, seeks to enable and support the establishment of mutual communication between Czech society and foreigners from third countries living in the Czech Republic.
