We motivate and support Roma children and youth to discover how education can change their lives. Through the Avela project, we provide pupils and students not only with tutoring and mentoring but also with a wide range of leisure activities that help them develop their potential and broaden their horizons.

· We are building on the successful tutoring project Dža Dureder, through which we provided tutoring to more than 1,000 Roma pupils and students between 2003 and 2022. As part of this support, among other things, 150 Roma students have been accepted into universities.

· Avela runs from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2028, throughout the Czech Republic.

· The first activities will take place in Stříbro, Prague 14, and Bruntál.

Why is it important to support Roma children and youth?

Children and young people of Roma origin unfortunately still face unequal access to education. In practice, this means they deal with obstacles daily, such as poverty, discrimination, and a lack of support from society. These factors prevent them from fully taking advantage of educational opportunities. As a result, they often lose motivation to study, have lower school attendance, and achieve poorer academic results. These factors hinder their personal and professional development and deepen their social exclusion.

What is our goal?

Education opens doors. We will help Roma pupils and students improve their academic performance and reduce the rate of early school leaving. This will increase their chances of gaining the qualifications they need for successful employment and full inclusion in society. At the same time, we will foster cooperation with schools and parents, which is essential for the successful education of Roma children and youth.

What activities will we organize?

· We will provide tutoring and mentoring in an informal environment, including preparation for entrance exams.

· We will develop children’s communication and intercultural skills to make it easier for them to integrate into the education system.

· We will organize meetings of children and youth from different schools to motivate and inspire each other.

· We will show children how to spend their free time meaningfully.

· We will organize discussions with successful Roma role models who will share their journeys and inspire the children.

The AVELA project is co-funded by the European Union.
